BLACK SHED | JANUARY 2019 - JANUARY 2020
Black Shed is an all female, year-long research and development project.
The outcome is a body of research to support the design and self-build of a small family dwelling for an artist staying at Grizedale Arts in Cumbria.
The research addresses feminist history within the architectural practice, techniques of self-build and kit building as well as collaborative practice.
As one of five women working on the project I bring an interest in how narrative and oral histories can inform design, how this writing can be interpreted through drawing and abstraction. The project has also allowed me to apply previous academic research into domestic architectures, single occupancy dwellings, and how inherited architectures inform our subjectivity - into a live site.
Our research includes internal and external workshops, drawing and writing practices, interviews, lectures, seminars as well as library-based research.
In collaboration with Georgia Battye, Katrina Black, Siobhan Forshaw and Rhianon Morgan Hatch.
